Borail Wildlife Sanctuary

North Cachar and Cachar are the  two southern most districts of Assam. The two reserve forests North Cachar RF and Borail RF comprises the Borail wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 326.24 sq. km. The  rich vegetation of the sanctuary plays a crucial role in providing a perfect ecosystem to this forest.The Borail Wildlife sanctuary is also known for its Semi-Evergreen Forests and Tropical Moist Evergreen.

The sanctuary with many streams rivulets and water pits, is located on a hilly terrain. Among all the forests of Assam this forest is located on the highest altitude. Some area of the forest is more than 1500 metres from sea level.

Borail Wildlife Sanctuary is an an ideal place for both mammals and reptiles and also houses a variety of birds and animals. King Cobra, the world`s most venomous snake can be found in this forest.The sanctuary also houses some of the common reptile species like, Red snake, Rock python, Green Pit viper etc. Asian Leaf turtle and Brown hill tortoise, the two endangered species of tortoise are also found here.

The  Sanctuary also gives shelter to mammals like, slow Loris, Flying fox,  Golden cat, Barking Deer, jungle wild dog,Giant squirrel, Clouded leopard, Porcupine, Leopard, Hoolock Gibbon, Pigtailed Macaque, Capped Langur , Himalayan Black Dear, sambar, fishing cat, etc.

Borail Wildlife Sanctuary also houses different kinds of avifauna. Different species of Hornbill including Great Pied Hornbill is found in the sanctuary. Other species of birds that are found here are sunder billed Vulture, white backed vulture, mountain bamboo partridge, white checked hill Partridge, Grey Peacock Pheasant, Khaleej Pheasant, etc.

The sanctuary is also rich in vegetation apart from birds and animals. The Borail Wildlife Sanctuary consists of semi evergreen forest and tropical moist evergreen. Thick bamboo forest and grassland are also found in this sanctuary. Different species of orchids are commonly seen in this forest, due to the ideal climate condition and suitable geographical location.

October – March.

Nearest town

Silchar is the nearest town. It is 40 kms from the forest area.

How to reach

Kumbhirgram Airport in Silchar is just 40 kms away. One can also visit the sanctuary from Karimgang which is only 40 kms from the sanctuary.

To avail the facility of Tourist lodge, one can contact Assam Tourism Department. One can also stay in Silchar town.
